Moving from home to Giannattasio has brought Michael even closer to an independent life. With support from HeartShare staff, Michael can plan moving into his own apartment.

Thomas Hoefel, who manages the HeartShare Giannattasio Residence, helped Michael strive for greater things. In addition to his long-time career at HeartShare, Tommy is a DJ. Michael and Tommy bonded through their interest in music.

With Tommy’s help, Michael is pursuing his dream of becoming a DJ. Together, they’ve bought new equipment, researched DJ classes and discussed the blueprint of Michael’s business, which will help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities become DJs too.

Through those experiences, Michael’s wheelchair does not confine him. “A DJ is someone who expresses himself,” Michael said. “I feel free.”

Tommy and Michael — like so many at HeartShare — developed a bond that transcends disability and is built on compassion, mutual understanding and a great sense of humor!
