Legendary Q104.3 FM DJ Jim Kerr will host

The 11th edition of HeartShare’s ArtShare, the annual art gallery exhibit showcasing new works by artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), will launch with an opening reception at Clover’s Fine Art Gallery in Brooklyn on Thursday, November 7, 2019, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Legendary Q104.3 FM DJ and HeartShare Board Member Jim Kerr will host the reception.

ArtShare 2019 will feature more than 165 works by 91 artists, ages 3 to 65-plus, executed in a wide range of media: acrylic, tempra, water colors, alcohol ink, prints, photographs and mixed media. The exhibit will also include works from the artisans of the Brooklyn Jewelry Studio, who have displayed and sold their work at ArtShare since 2010. The Studio produces one-of-a-kind necklaces, bracelets and earrings made from semi-precious gemstones, Czech glass crystals, lampwork beads and metallic beads.

ArtShare was created in 2009, the brainchild of artist, gallery curator and HeartShare volunteer Barbara Nowak-Cuthel and HeartShare Executive Director, Developmental Disabilities Services, Linda Tempel. Through an artist-in-residence program and museum partnerships, artists and artisans with I/DD are introduced to a variety of media that inspire beautiful and meaningful expression, opening a window into their world. The initiative includes exhibitions in galleries, lobbies and public spaces throughout New York. The program’s centerpiece is a gallery exhibition showcasing a curated collection of master artwork, co-curated by Nowak-Cuthel and HeartShare Brooklyn Day Habilitation Program Coordinator Edgardo Velez.

“By showcasing the art of people with disabilities, ArtShare grows talent and pride while sharing incredible artworks with the broader community,” says Tempel. “It is the best example of HeartShare’s mission ‘to expand opportunities and enhance lives’.”

ArtShare has forged educational partnerships with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Brooklyn Museum, American Museum of Natural History and Rubin Museum to expand inclusion for visitors and artists with I/DD through access programs that influence how exhibits are conceived and presented.

“I think it’s incredibly important to always include an experiential component for museum visitors with disabilities,” says Laura Sloan, Manager of Docent and Access Programs at the Rubin Museum, who has served as tour guide for HeartShare Individuals. “All visitors benefit from this, but especially those with disabilities. Having something they can touch, smell, hear, etc.— something activating more than the visual, stimulating multiple senses— can help reach people on multiple levels.”
