HeartShare program participants Edgardo, Kenneth and Daniel were presented with Celebrating Success Awards from the Queens Council on Developmental Disabilities on Tuesday, April 25.
Edgardo, who lives at HeartShare’s Sharkey II Residence, is being recognized for his incredible perseverance over the past year. Eddie has experienced issues with mobility throughout his life, but last year, Eddie needed to rely on a walker and sometimes, a wheelchair. Although Eddie was getting by, he faced serious news. Without surgery, Eddie might not walk again. After his surgery, Edgardo worked very hard during 6 weeks of intensive rehab. When he returned home, Eddie didn’t need his walker and he even walked up two flights of stairs. Eddie continues to persevere in physical therapy, where he is setting and reaching new goals for his mobility. Eddie is healthier and growing stronger every day.
Kenneth, who participates in HeartShare’s Employment Program, has reached his goal of working in food services. He currently is working as a Dining Room Attendant at Queens College. Kenneth has been moving swiftly in achieving his goals. After he moved into his new residence last year, he secured the job at Queens College. Today, Kenneth manages his own budget and travels independently across New York City. Kenneth has an independent life.
Daniel, who attends HeartShare’s Union Turnpike Day Program, has been volunteering as a Computer Tech Specialist there. Danny has taken a leading role troubleshooting technical issues, such as assisting staff with printing problems. Alongside his DSP, Danny set up and completed system maintenance for computers donated to the program. Danny has acquired skills to help others and himself.
Congratulations to Eddie, Kenneth and Daniel on their achievements!
