The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, commonly referred to as LIHEAP, is a government run energy grant program dedicated to keeping American families safe and healthy through initiatives that assist families with energy costs. Through federally funded block grants, LIHEAP helps nearly 6 million Americans throughout every state manage costs associated with home energy bills, energy crisis and weatherization or energy-related minor home repairs. LIHEAP works primarily to help Americans, especially low income households, in meeting their immediate home energy needs. Last year, they provided nearly $4.4 billion in energy relief, and every year, they work to reduce the risk of health and safety problems that arise from unsafe heating and cooling practices.
