Anthony had the opportunity to see his favorite R&B artist The Weeknd at the Barclay’s Center. This wouldn’t have happened unless HeartShare staff stopped to ask, What does Anthony enjoy, and how can we help him achieve that? Since Anthony is non-verbal, this question was difficult to answer. It didn’t stop the HeartShare residential, day habilitation and MSC teams from finding out. Over the course of several months, they downloaded songs and created playlists for Anthony. “Through careful observation of his body movement and facial expressions, we identified Anthony’s favorite genre of music,” said Nena Bowen, a Direct Support Professional at HeartShare’s Carroll Street Residence. As a result, Anthony experienced a sense of inclusion and expression of personal identity that we often take for granted.
