On Tuesday, October 1, the Dyker Beach Golf Course will host the 10th Annual Jim Buckley Memorial Golf Outing, dedicated to the memory of a man who dedicated himself to HeartShare and New Yorkers in need. On this special anniversary, we asked his son Jimmy Buckley to share his personal recollections of his father and why it’s so important to him to continue his father’s work.
What can someone expect if they sign up for the Golf Outing?
You can expect a great day of golf, good food and great prizes at a very reasonable price.
What’s your personal favorite aspect of the Golf Outing?
My favorite aspect of the Golf Outing is the players. We have a very loyal following that comes out year after year to honor the memory of my dad. My own sons and my nephews come out to carry on the legacy that their grandfather started years ago. My daughter helps me with the BBQ at the turn. My brother-in-laws help with the fundraising for the event and golf every year. My wife and best friend Audrey do a great job with assembling all of our raffle prizes. It’s truly a family affair!
Why was Jim so committed to HeartShare’s cause?
My dad has always been a quiet advocate for the less fortunate. And he has raised his children to continue to “Do the right thing.” He was committed to HeartShare simply because HeartShare is committed to the adults and children they serve. He was a very smart businessman, so it makes sense that he wanted to work with HeartShare because 90 cents of every dollar goes directly to HeartShare’s clients.
Can you tell a story about Jim that illustrates his commitment?
I can remember when I was in my twenties, my father and I would go over to the Buckley Residence in Canarsie to paint the interior. He would also throw a BBQ every summer for the residents. Always manning the grill. He was not afraid to roll up his sleeves and go to work. It was not enough to just write a check—he was always hands-on. He was very proud that the Canarsie residence was named in his and my mom’s honor and he made sure that it felt like home.
Why do you feel it’s important to carry on Jim’s support?
It’s important to carry on his support for HeartShare because, in doing so, we are keeping his memory alive. HeartShare has become part of the Buckley Family because of everything that my dad has taught us. Most importantly, to always give back.
