HeartShare’s Brooklyn Day Hab welcomed MoMA educator Rachel Cohen for an art class on September 21, 2016. The ladies at Brooklyn Day Hab scoured vintage National Geographic magazines and various photo prints to create an expressive collage in the spirit of Dadaism. Cohen offered Marcel Duchamp as visual inspiration.
“I’m delighted to be here at HeartShare. We’ve forged this partnership because art is for everyone,” explained Cohen, who formerly worked at a day habilitation program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Many of those in the class also are experienced contributing ArtShare artists and greatly enjoy the artmaking process. “It calms me,” said Priscilla, who crafted an oceanscape scene. ArtShare co-curators Barbara Cuthel and Edgardo Velez will compile the pieces from today’s class in a scrapbook, which our program participants self-titled “Brooklyn Day Hab: Our Story.”
The Museum of Modern Art has partnered with HeartShare to expand educational opportunities to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. HeartShare program participants also have had the opportunity to attend museum tours customized to their learning needs. Stay tuned for a video story on this creative partnership.
